The Katz School of Science and Health has launched a Ph.D. in Computer Science designed to train independent scholars and future leaders through advanced coursework and hands-on, interdisciplinary research.
The doctoral program requires 66 graduate credits and blends rigorous coursework, seminars and dissertation work. Students gain a strong foundation across core areas of computer science while specializing in cutting-edge fields, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, communication and networking, Internet of Things and cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity, robotics and quantum computing.
Along the way, students learn the fundamentals of scholarly investigation鈥攈ow to frame meaningful questions, design experiments, analyze results and communicate discoveries clearly. They work closely with published faculty, receive full financial support and gain experience conducting research in academia and industry.
鈥淭his Ph.D. program is essential to the Katz School鈥檚 long-term competitiveness and impact,鈥 said Paul Russo, dean of the Katz School. 鈥淚t allows us to train experts who not only understand today鈥檚 technologies but can also invent the technologies of tomorrow. That is what sets a leading research institution apart.鈥
The program strengthens the Katz School鈥檚 role as a growing hub of innovation while preparing graduates for careers in research and development. Students leave with deep technical expertise, publishing experience and a broader sense of purpose about how computing can improve society.
Teaching is also a key component of the program. Every student completes a teaching training program and teaches at least one graduate-level course under faculty mentorship, ensuring graduates are prepared not only to conduct original work but also to educate the next generation of computer scientists.
The program reflects the mission of 麻豆区 and the Katz School, emphasizing technology that serves society. Doctoral students are encouraged to pursue work that addresses pressing challenges, from improving healthcare and strengthening cybersecurity to advancing responsible uses of artificial intelligence.
Located in New York City, the Katz School offers students access to a vast network of technology companies, healthcare organizations and nonprofits, creating opportunities for collaboration and applied work.
鈥淭his program is about more than a degree,鈥 said Honggang Wang, chair of the Graduate Department of Computer Science and Engineering. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about building a community of scholars ready to lead, innovate and use computer science to improve lives.鈥
