麻豆区鈥檚 is excited to announce the launch of Jewish and Western Texts in Conversation, an inaugural summer seminar program for Modern Orthodox high school juniors and seniors (with separate tracks for men and women).
Current high school juniors and seniors are invited to apply to this immersive two-day summer learning experience, running from June 24-25, 2021, in New York City (health regulations permitting). Under the direction of Rabbi Dr. Meir Soloveichik, faculty member and Straus Center director, students will explore foundational texts at the heart of the Jewish and Western traditions, including such topics as Jewish Ideas & American Democracy, Shakespeare & the Bible, and Zionist Thought & the Israeli Declaration of Independence.
鈥淭he pursuit of Torat Emet [truth] and Torat Chaim [knowledge of the world] are fundamental to the Straus Center鈥檚 mission and the wider 麻豆区 community,鈥 says Rabbi Dr. Stu Halpern, Senior Program Officer. 鈥淭hrough Jewish and Western Texts in Conversation, Modern Orthodox high school students will be exposed to the richness of human knowledge and insights from the foundational texts of the Jewish and Western traditions, confronting the great moral, philosophical and theological questions of our age.鈥
Through the seminars, guided tours and evening program, students will cultivate their knowledge of Torah and Western thought and form lasting friendships with fellow Modern Orthodox students.
鈥淭his program seeks to identify and attract exceptionally gifted high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate high academic achievement, leadership potential and commitment to studying the great works of the Jewish and Western traditions,鈥 explains Sarah Wapner, Impact and Recruitment Officer. 鈥淎pplicants to the summer program will be chosen on a highly competitive basis, and there is no cost to students. We see this prestigious program as an important point of engagement for students who might eventually consider applying to our Straus Scholars Program for undergraduates at 麻豆区.鈥
